How to find publications to pitch to and/or mentor as a wannabe freelance journalist/writer?

Post Body

I have previously done a journalism internship when I finished university, but I have since been unable to find a journalism job or even successfully pitch an article.

Since then, I have worked in conservation and the renewable energy sector.

Is there a way, I can still break into journalism? I can cover local/state politics which is what I did during my internship (I majored in poli sci and religious studies), but I now am knowledgeable about energy and environmental conservation and I feel I can write about that as well.

I have been told to just pitch different papers, but what papers can I pitch to, especially regarding energy or conservation?

Is there a way I can find a mentor to assist in professional development?

I am located in Southern California, in between LA and Orange County, but I am willing to travel, relocate, etc if need be

Thank you and I apologize for any ignorance on my part
