The struggles of being a blind journalist
Post Body

I find my situation to be somewhat ironic.. Two years ago I was diagnosed with glaucoma and became legally blind. Soon after I started working with an English language outlet based in East Asia. They hired me remotely for a stint and had no issues with my vision. Sadly due to visa issues I couldn't stay on. I try to look for work in the states. I was even recommended to work for a few digital outlets. However, I never got through. Every single job tells me "We require a drivers license", and when I bring up (at the interview) that I can't medically drive due to vision they go "oh, well you need to do X Y Z and we dont have public transit here"..

Media work in general is where I feel the most comfortable. Sure the pay isn't great, but it doesnt pay to work in the civil service either. Im currently in South Carolina, and every radio station, every news outlet is an hour away ny car. They seem to be desperate for people, but not desperate enough to hire a person who can't drive apparently. I am otherwise completely qualified and excited to get shit done. I currently run a news podcast for fun, I'd like to actually get paid, ya know? :D
