When do first come first serve sites become readily available?

We’d like to make a trip to JT in the next month or two. Right now, all the weekends we’re available are booked up, and I know it’s really hard to snag a first come site at this time. I was wondering when they start becoming more readily available?
I can’t take too many days off, so our only option is arriving on Friday and hoping we find a site, or maybe booking a reserved site on Thursday and going out early Friday morning to look for an open one for the rest of the weekend.
