Backcountry site availability near Ryan campground, Covington crest TH.
Post Body

Greetings all!

I’m hiking the California riding and hiking trail westbound next weekend and am curious about the site options around where my water caches will be.

Night one of the permit is for the lost horse zone. Water will be cached at Ryan campground. Plan is to find a place to camp on approach to the cache, as the lost horse zone ends just after the campground. Same plan for night two, but in the Covington zone on approach to the Covington crest TH.

Does anyone know if there are good camping options in these areas? It’s my first time in Joshua tree so I’m not sure what the ground conditions are like or how plentiful tent spots are.

I’m aware of all the rules about distance from roads, trails, and trailheads, LNT, no fires, etc, but any other tips are appreciated!

Thanks in advance!
