I'm going to a Ramadan celebration on next Shabbat - a joint Ramadan / Shabat celebration - with Muslims in my community. Friends. My children's friends' parents. This is a beautiful inter-faith event.
There is a post about an Israeli fascist in another subreddit - a "heritage minister", who made some comment about "ending Ramadan". I want to shout out that the hate the minister preaches is not a Jewish value; it's the opposite. Instead, I commented on one of the many ignorant, borderline (but not completely) antisemetic posts, questioning about what should be done about Hamas. And then I was banned because I'm anti-Hamas.
I hold Jewish progressive values - the values of inclusion, respect, peace, supporting the downtrodden through mitzvot - more important than idea of Jewish identity as a tribal affiliation. Jewish values are the core of my Jewish existence; not some identity "tag" that I attach to my persona. These values, and my families herritage, are important for me.
(If you do not view your Jewish identity and values in the same way I do, it's OK. We don't need to argue about that. We are not going to change each other's mind and it's not the point of this post)
Apparently, it's OK to silence the outrage over the rape Jews on social media. It's OK to deny the causality of events in the Middle East except for any causality that cast Jews as villians. There can be no discussion about what to do about the killers and rapists; they are...excused.
The problem is, how can we still hold onto the progressive Jewish values when we are under attack? Supporting starving Palestinian people - even if they hate Jews - is a mitzvot. We should NOT attack Palestinians and their supporters. IMO, if you take Jewish values to heart, then we should be the loudest voices in calling for peace, justice, and equality. However, we don't have the space to uphold these values. For us to support the Palestinian people, we would need to stand shoulder to shoulder with antisemites and terrorist sympathizers, or else our support is rejected and we are attacked.
I really want to hear ideas on how to find the space in public discourse where I can be pro-Jew, pro-human rights, and not be expected to stand with terrorists.
