I’m several years away from retirement, so this is more for future planning.
Oct 7th changed many things more important than my retirement plans, but it’s made me realize that I need a place with a strong Jewish community. It doesn’t need to be a huge Jewish community but it needs to be one where I’m not going to feel alone.
That said, some things that are important. Cost of housing of course will be important. I’m looking for an urban area, I’m not a suburban kind of guy. I’d prefer a city that is very walkable and I’d like a place with some large urban parks. I’m a big baseball fan and I don’t need a major league team , Triple A is just fine. I’d like a place with decent public transportation. I’d be looking at buying a condo and one that wouldn’t have stairs as my hope is this will be the final move for me and eventually I’m probably not going to want to be walking up and down. Bonus points if they have a theater that occasionally plays old movies.
FYI I’m reform , much more culturally Jewish Then practicing.
Lastly, climate wise I’d prefer a colder climate. If I never see another 95 degree day I’ll be very happy.
Prior to 10/7 my top 2 were St Louis and Pittsburgh ( I used to work in both cities a lot and enjoyed being there)
Post 10/7 I added Pikesville Maryland.
I’d love to hear people’s suggestions on other cities to look at.
Thanks
