I saw an image of jews protesting against Israel with the caption "Judaism yes, zionism no". Obviously, this is inherently contradictory. It's not like you can take one and leave the other. But looking past the issues within such a view for a moment, isn't this simply pandering to the rest of the fervently anti-Israel world?
Anytime I've seen a jew rail against zionism, you get non-jews salivating, jumping at the opportunity to go "now that's a good man, he knows what's up" as if that isn't just about the most obnoxiously condescending thing in the world.
At the same time, this isn't a perfect situation. The israeli government has made tons of mistakes. There absolutely are a lot of racist, violent israelis. Innocent palestinians have been misplaced.
Why does Israel exist? One of the world's favorite pastimes is jerking each other off on their supposed moral superiority over the evil jews who are now the new nazis (they love to compare jews to nazis, isn't that clever??? first they were they were victims of nazis, now THEY are the nazis!! get it?!).
But again, why does Israel exist? Because the same world that deems Israel to be an evil state, created the need for it in the first place.
Is it not then, a jew's duty to land somewhere in the middle? One must understand the need for and support the notion of a jewish state, without which jews are simply not safe in the world, while at the same time recognising the issues that plague such a complex situation, and trying to fix these problems, so that innocent palestinians and jews may not be harmed.
All too often I see fervent anti-zionists, and fervent zionists. Evidently neither position is sustainable.
PS - This sentiment has probably been expressed before in this subreddit, but I wanted to post this nonetheless
