“The singular-plural dialectic is very clearly on display, moreover, in Isaiah 6: 8, where Yahweh asks: “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?”[ 658]
The first and second parts of this question are parallels of one another, indicating that God is using “I” and “us” interchangeably, even as the Lord Jesus Christ does in John 3: 11 where he states—“Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know, and bear witness to what we have seen, but you do not receive our testimony.”[ 659]
Note that the “we” being used by Christ in this text cannot refer to the other Jews, as it does in John 4: 22, since Nicodemus is himself a Jew. Nor can it refer to the disciples, seeing as the disciples did not witness or see what Christ had witnessed and seen. Instead, the “we” has reference to the other two persons who are always with Christ, witnessing to the veracity of his teaching and claims about himself—namely, the Father[ 660] and the Holy Spirit.[ 661]”
