Need clarification

Hey all! I’m trying to teach myself Japanese, I have many study guides and books, flashcards, you name it. However, I get confused whenever I see some parts of the words in parentheses. Is that part spoken with the word? I don’t always see things written or taught this way so it’s a little confusing when I see parts of the language in parenthesis in one book, but not another. Any advice would help, thanks!
