They weren’t really intense or bad at all. I encourage you to come here even if you’re nervous about this.
However definitely download the app NERV. It keeps you updated on any earthquakes/ major weather issues. Like anywhere, being informed is important. I know many people aren’t from areas prone to earthquakes that visit.
Be realistic that there’s a good likelihood you’ll feel some quakes, but the likelihood of one that impacts your travel is pretty low. As someone who had only felt one earthquake back home in the states and I was too young to remember, it has been a bit of an adjustment. Many of the buildings in Tokyo seem fit to deal with huge quakes, let alone some tremors.
