Hi, I am in my young 20s from the states and my company gives the option to work abroad for a couple months a year and I am thinking of using this in Japan in 2024! I have heard a lot about how unappealing the weather is in June/July time, but the timing would only work around that time for me. I will basically be solo traveling to Japan for around two months and am looking for any tips, advice, or warnings. I am still deciding the exact dates but it would likely be around May and June time.
My main concern is housing and friends, I have been to Japan once and I was mostly in Kyoto, Shibuya and Shinjuku areas. I am hesitant to live somewhere that I have not been before so I would prefer to stay in Shibuya or Shinjuku. Since I will be staying for a longer period of time, I was considering staying at a homestay instead of a hotel or airbnb. I found a couple programs on google but some seem like they are primarily for students, or for people who are staying while attending a language school. The main issue is l also be working my job at the same time which means I will be working late hours (likely from maybe 8pm - 4am), the exact time is relatively flexible but it would still be around those hours. Although most of my work does not require talking, if I have one or two meetings a day I do not want to disturb the hosts. I thought of working at a coworking space during my work hours instead but im not sure how realistic that would be to do every night. Any suggestions or input for that would be great as well!
I am a little worried it could get lonely in if I am in a place for an extended people of time without anyone I know. Thats another reason why I am considering a homestay, so I can immediately get in touch with someone. Since I am doing a solo trip, I am not sure how to easy it is to make friends whether they be other foreigners or locals. I do have two friends who are currently living in Japan so if things really go south I know they will be able to help me, but they have their own lives there so although we will see each other a couple times, I will mostly be doing things myself.
Honestly I feel like most things will kind of work itself out once I put enough planning into it. I have also started studying Japanese so I can have a basic understanding and know some common phrases for when I go. Any input on the timing, housing, meeting people, what to pack, or anything else would be greatly appreciated! I am so excited for this opportunity!
