Hi,
First of all, thanks for all the people who contribute to this subreddit, spent most of this morning reading through it.
I have wanted to visit Japan basically all my life, and I just turned 50 so I said to my wife "OK, we need to do this while I am still kinda young".
Plan is 14 days, Tokyo - Osaka/Kyoto - Hiroshima - Tokyo Airport
The problem I have while I have traveled all over the world, this is the first trip I have found overwhelming to plan. I think the sheer size of Tokyo and the stuff to do there is pickling my brain a bit, perhaps this is maybe the wrong way of approaching this, but I think it would be easier for me to work backwards with the smaller stuff under my belt, get a rough idea of timescales and help me balance the whole trip as I go along, leaving planning Tokyo to last.
Just to complicate things I will be traveling with my wife and 2 children (11 and 9) next year, although they are seasoned travellers to New York, Florida, Paris and London so I think they'll be fine.
So Hiroshima will be my last few days, plan is to go from Osaka to Hiroshima and then straight back to Tokyo to fly home. The reason I want to visit Hiroshima is that my car (Eunos Roadster) was built there at the Mazda factory in 1991 and I have owned it for 20 years, so it's kind of part of the family. So I want to visit where it was born.
Day 1: Arrive in Hiroshima from Osaka in the morning. The Mazda museum's English Language tour starts at 10:00AM so probably best wait to Day 3 I think. So taxi to Hotel/Air BnB (neither booked yet) and then the Peace Park and Museum.
Day 2: My daughter has heard of Ōkunoshima so she would like to go there. I gather it can take 2 hours to get there and 2 hours to return, so I assume this is an all day trip? I understand Hiroshima Station to Tadanoumi Station is the best route.
Day 3: Mazda Museum in the morning, then return to Tokyo for the flight home.
Looking at the above, would t be possible to fit Hiroshima Castle or Shukkeien Garden into it? The other concern is while think Ōkunoshima sounds cool, is it worth losing a full day over? Should I perhaps swop it for Miyajima as my daughter would also love the wild deer there or even swop it for Hiroshima Castle & Shukkeien Garden?
Thanks in advance.
I'm going in October to the cities you mentioned and I'm spending three days in Hiroshima. The plan is Hiroshima, Miyajima, Ōkunoshima (for half a day — there isn't really much to do other than feed rabbits and a small museum from what I gathered) then back to Hiroshima.
Super excited for you though! So happy to hear that your dream is coming true.
