So I made one of these threads last year, and here it is updated for Autumn 2017. Below is information regarding temple illuminations and light-ups grouped by area within Kyoto.

This list covers all kinds of places and obviously the more popular places get very busy during autumn, whether they put on any illuminations or not, especially at peak colours. Hopefully you'll find some info helpful to you, and maybe discover some new/lesser known places etc.

Higashiyama and East Kyoto:

Do note that what you can see at these places during regular opening hours, compared to during evening illuminations, often differs. For example you may be able to enter or walk past some of the smaller temple/shrine buildings during the day, but not during the evening, so some places can be worth visiting both day and night. This may also affect receiving Goshuin (only some places will be giving them in the evenings, many do not even give out pre-done Goshuin) and some places may not be selling omamori or other souvenirs. Though some of the larger places may have food stalls or a tea area set up for refreshments.

All details are as printed in the mapple Kyoto Autumn Colours 2017 guide, with the exceptions of Konkai Kōmyō-ji, Shōrin-ji and Shōrin-in. I’ll update if I get any current and solid info.
