Catherine Anne Hubback was the daughter of Jane Austen's brother, Sir Francis William Austen. She was born the year after Jane died, so Catherine grew up knowing her aunt through her works and family memories.
Catherine Hubback published The Younger Sister, a continuation of Austen's unfinished The Watsons, in 1850, in an attempt to support herself and her children after her husband's institutionalization. She continued writing and would eventually publish ten eleven books in total. (Source: The Jane Austen Centre)
Here is a summary of The Younger Sister via LibriVox:
Emma Watson, the youngest child of six from a poor family, was sent away as a child to be raised by her wealthy aunt and uncle. When her uncle dies and her aunt remarries, Emma (now a pretty, well-educated, and opinionated young woman) returns home to help care for her ailing father and reconnect with her estranged siblings. She quickly must learn how to behave among the less affluent and navigate her way through the affections of many young men vying for her attention.
Note: In volume 3, chapter 17, there is a scene where, in the words of this blogger, Emma "comes near to a threat of [SA]". It's in the dialogue near the end of a chapter between Emma and a man in her party, if you want to skip over that section.
This is a longer book broken into three parts, so we'll be reading it over November and December, with two weeks in between discussion posts.
Here's our schedule:
Wednesday, November 16: discuss Volume 1
Wednesday, November 30: discuss Volume 2
Wednesday, December 14: discuss Volume 3
Hopefully this will give us all enough time to fit in reading around the upcoming holidays!
The Younger Sister is available via Project Gutenberg. You can find the audiobook on LibriVox - a version was uploaded to YouTube earlier this year.
