Does anyone know where "the ton" comes from

Post Body

I know the term is used heavily in JAFF but it's never used in Austen. She calls London "town" or "London"

I've been reading other authors, some Bronte, Gaskell, Maria Edgeworth, and Fanny Burney and I have yet to encounter that word. Is is a historical romance invention? Does anyone know?
