This might be a hot take, but I think that melodically, Writing’s On The Wall is one of the best and most beautiful Bond themes. If you haven’t listened to the instrumental version on the soundtrack, please do.
Not so much of a hot take, I do agree with most everyone out there that the vocals REALLY take away from what is otherwise a beautiful theme. I like the lyrics quite a lot, but the falsetto delivery, and just the general voice of Sam Smith doesn’t fit Bond for me.
I think this song could’ve worked with a deeper vocal singer, such as Tom Jones and Thunderball. Similar vocal experimentation happens in No Time To Die with Billie Eilish’s whisper singing, and with Jack White’s unique voice in Another Way To Die.
I’ve always felt Bond themes should have a certain sound. Either a deeper, male serenade like From Russia With Love, Thunderball, You Know My Name, a soulful power like any of Shirley Bassey’s themes, Licence To Kill, and GoldenEye, or a more youthful female voice like You Only Live Twice, or Nobody Does It Better. There are of course outliers, but most songs aren’t as good when they don’t stick to one of those three bass templates.
Thoughts? Who do you think would do a good job with a Bond theme?
