Not really understanding the fascination with sharing food and drinks

Post Body

I do not give permission for post to be reshared.

Sooo 2 of us in my family are immune compromised, so my in laws havenā€™t seen us since Covid started. I had a baby about a month after the initial lockdowns started whom they hadnā€™t met, so now where itā€™s summer and numbers are down, my husband said they could come but we would stick to outdoor things (MIL isnā€™t vaccinated and they havenā€™t been particularly careful at all)

They complained a bit but came around. Weā€™ve done most dining in outdoor restaurants, but they keep wanting to share drinks/food. Even before Covid, my older kid has a lot of allergies so we donā€™t usually like other people sharing food/drinks with him in case theyā€™re eating something heā€™s allergic to, etc but my in laws keep trying to sneak their food and drinks to them - even if my kid is eating or drinking the exact same thing. Also, whatā€™s the point of doing outdoor things for Covid if theyā€™re literally going to be trying to share everything they eat or drink šŸ™ƒ

And like many in this group, my husband refuses to enforce the boundary so itā€™s on me. Every single time even if heā€™s right there he claims he ā€œdidnā€™t hear itā€ or ā€œdidnā€™t see itā€.

Thank you all for all your feedback!

This was probably 20 years ago visiting my mother-in-law with some other family my kids the other peoples kids and so forth. Weā€™re all at this huge table Iā€™m sitting near MIL and sitting near my kids because they were younger.

MIL proceeds to reach across the table with her fork to take a leftover piece of steak from my daughter who was not done eating yet she proclaimed as my mother-in-law was taking it. I proceeded to stab my mother-in-law in her hand with my fork repeatedly until she dropped the fork and piece of steak looking at me.

I told her to stop and never to do this again to my kid. She was very embarrassed almost like she forgot other people were there and she was doing this. And no this was not the first time of her doing it.
