I mentioned in my wedding post that Empty Ellie has done some seriously braggy shit. I mean, I know she brags incessantly (and embarrassingly about me) to all and sundry. I've both been embarrassed by it, and seen the relatives that she's bragging to look uncomfortable and pitying. But there was one particular session that really took the cake.

(Also, before I go on, having hung out at RBN & RBB a bit, I've got to say that this thing of jumping between being the GC & the SG is really disconcerting & unhealthy. I'm only starting to really realize how fucked up it is and feels and that the abrupt jumps may have really done a number on my brain)

About ten years ago, when I was only a few years into my career (and doing really well), I was interviewed for a trade journal for my job. Even though it's a trade journal for my job, it's also a fairly well-red publication, because of the industry it's about (Fashion. You can probably put together the pieces of what it would be).

Because of that interview, I got called by a national magazine, to do a more in-depth interview. They liked my little word bites.

Based on that, I ended up being interviewed (very briefly, a very small piece) for a national news station.

This was all kind of crazy, but I didn't get paid for it, it was kinda cool, but not a huge deal to me. I mean, it wasn't going to turn into anything, and it was fun, and kinda crazy how it happened, but that was kind of it for me.

Not so for Empty Ellie. After the trade journal interview, she co-opted a home-run business of a relative (who had a copying machine) to make photocopies of the article for ALL her friends and family members. And she expected them to all come by and get them, and talk to her (to my knowledge, most of them did, heaven knows why).

After the national magazine thing, she did the same thing.

After the news interview, she wanted to create a packet that included both print interviews, a VHS of the national news interview, AND a further special interview by me, for the family/friends. This would have cost money, so she wanted her friends and family all to pay $20 for this to happen.

Now, my immediate family humored her and said they would, but most people were like...um, no. That's great about your daughter, great for her, but no.

I also refused to do a further special interview, and also told her that I felt really uncomfortable by all of this.

She (of course) flipped her shit. I was being ungrateful, you know. I should be happy that she was so proud of me. And I should be proud that The World had noticed how amazing I was - who knows what will come next?

I knew what'd come next. I was a 2 minute sound-bite because I had an interesting job, attractive face, and could make up witty comments on the fly. After all that, the world would (and did) move on.

I had to explain to her that no I was NOT interested in trying to parlay this into some kind of TV special or weekly broadcast or whatever else the fuck she had suddenly thought would happen.

In the end, after much arguing, she dropped the special packet idea, and sulked for a few months, during which time I didn't hear from her. That part (not hearing from her for some months) was definitely the best part of the situation.
