Everyone thinks Emriss Silentborn is the sweetest Monarch, but I believe that she's possibly one of the most dangerous things on Cradle.
As for sweet, I think her anger, resentment, and desire for revenge or justice against a class of people (i.e. the Monarchs), is at least equal to her desire to rid Cradle of the Dreadgods.
Completely outnumbered for centuries, she's been pretending to play along to get a along, but I'm pretty sure that she must view all Monarchs as the same.
This generation is just as morally bankrupt as the generation that killed her (and others) in order to maintain a status quo that allowed millions of innocent people to die within their near immortal lifetimes, just so that they could be the kings and queens of an anthill.
Consider how much of her time and energy Emriss has devoted to keeping the Silent King imprisoned, with most of the rest of her time spent and energy helping people improve themselves and their quality of life (all/any people not just her own vassals).
Emriss may not be terribly focused on revenge, but considering the good she does for the world, imagine her seething resentment whenever one of these murdering assholes makes some self-justifying rationalizing speech minimising the harm they cause the planet while trying to convince themselves and others that they are nevessary and are actually doing more good than harm.
While the disconnection between the memories of her first life may have significantly cooled any feelings of anger and injury, how can she not think of this generation as exactly the same as the one that assassinated her?
Behind her placid and gentle demeanor there must be a part of her that rages against these parasites as she observes their (self)deceptions, manoeuvring, and petty bullshit.
And the way they treat her... Look at their interaction when Northstrider gets up in her face:
“You made a mistake today,” he said to Emriss. “I won’t forget that.”
“I don’t forget anything,” she said sadly.
What must have been going through her mind when this murdering POS of a thug tried to intimidate her?
That sadness must be a façade.
In fact, I believe that was a threat.
Let's backtrack to just after Dross pitched his and Lindon's plan to the Queen of...the trees:
Emriss remembered everything perfectly except events from before the death of her original form. Those were inherited, left behind as a contingency measure, and as a result they were a jumbled patchwork.
But she had never forgotten her purpose. ... The Monarchs had killed her. Since then, she had worked in subtler ways, but she always kept her many eyes open for opportunities.
Opportunities like this one.
An opportunity like Team Lindon. Which can by no means be considered an opportunity "to spread knowledge... life and light."
She may actually be saddened by the state of the world, but I think a certain part of that "sadness" is the mask she's been wearing while she waited for an opportunity like this one. To put it to a whole class of self-absorbed murdering bastards.
Emriss has remained on Cradle, patiently concealing her true feelings and intentions, while actually doing more than anyone else to mitigate the harm her presence causes, just so that she can help someone, anyone, who will have a reasonable chance to remove the Dreadgods.
Which, by necessity, means removing the Monarchs.
Maybe I'm wrong and she really doesn't include revenge among her motives in this quest.
But how can she not eagerly anticipate the comeuppance the Monarchs have got coming?
