Pardon if this has been discussed and I missed it. This is the first in the series I've read (because how could I resist for an extra day!?) and this might be me missing something super obvious.
After the gang ascends, they meet before the judges, and are meant to understand that in all likelihood the tasks they take on will either kill them or make them insane (a la Mad King). There's time pressure because they need to take care of the multi-universal disasters else Lindon might not make his way through the way.
So then we get the slice of life into each of the gang handling a scenario (I loved these), but there was no threat of death and the only madness would be from doing mundane paperwork, so you know, about the same level of danger as working at the DMV.
So, what am I missing? I think I'm either supposed to understand that it was a lark by the judges, and the work they were signing them up for was mundane and there was absolute tons of it, so it was a "wink, wink, totally impossible, you don't want it" reverse psychology moment...or the threat is that in one of the multitudes of times they do it, there will be threat (as evidenced by Lindon later on with his world eater fight) and we are just seeing snippets of the most interesting ones for each of the gang for flair and not to show off the danger?
Unless I really ADHD'd this portion of the book, I don't remember the time pressure of straightening things out before Lindon comes. So could someone let me know what I missed without making me feel like a total dunce?
Gratitude.
