Help with jumping between nails?

Hi! My husband and I have been really enjoying this game… I am not a gamer, so handling all the buttons doesn't come intuitively to me.

We are stuck on the toolbox battle scene… I can't seem to get it right when I have to jump to the nail/swing with the hammer/jump to the next nail, swing/jump to the toolbox platform.

I can pretty reliably jump to the first nail with the X and R-2 button, but I'm only 50-50 on making it to the second nail, and after what feels like 100 tries I've only made it to the platform once. Can you please give me some tips and pointers?
