How long will earth's influence last?
Post Body

What will become of earth eons into the future? Will it always be the capitol of our civilization, or will it be completely irrelevant? will it literally be the core of a megastructure containing all our resources, or will it be something that most people haven't even heard of? Here's a hypothetical scenario to display my idea. Over the next few millenia earth grows into a massive cosmic capital city that starts off fairly sparse as environmentalism gains momentum and sparks several religious movements, but eventually becomes an ecumenopolis and over time the various cultures of earth either leave or slowly merge into one with a global ethnicity, langue, and government focused on preserving human identity in the face of transhumanism while the colonies tend towards the opposite with the population of cybernetic flesh carpets officially reaching 10 trillion. Eventually the colonies surpass earth in population but earth still holds immense influence until 20,000 years from now the colonies launch a collective genocide on earth, earth recovers as a powerful Emperor emerges and launches as Great Crusade to reclaim the colonies. He fails. Earth becomes populated by scholars who gradually become less and less numerous as many lose interest until there's only a small town left and an interstellar corporation buys earth from them in exchange for personal mckendree cylinders. The corporation loans the planet to the Amish (yes, they're still around) who farm the planet to repay their debt, but eventually they decide to flee and leave the debt unpaid and tons of factions rush in believing to have "discovered" the planet. This continues throughout the history of the galaxy with the planet being rediscovered tens of billions of times, with many believing biological humans were primitive aliens incapable of technology. Earth gets moved between star systems and galaxies, called by trillions of names, disassembled and reassembled countless times, until finally being blown up and tossed into a black hole to entertain a superintelligence. The point of this little story is to show that I doubt earth and humans will be remembered for even 100,000 years.

We still use the time measurements of the Sumerians. Every single culture that has a concept of time more granular than "evening/noon/morning/in a few days/a few days back/in this or that season" does.

So.
