Personally I feel like it's more a marketing, training and convenience issue.
It's easier to go in debt for an expensive machine than to create a cheap one you don't know or know how to make.
I personally found it interesting primarily because it's a very interesting blueprint for space settlement. Weight and Age of Sail level infrastructure issues mean you want this sort of modularity and low tech approach. Just throw a Lego Mindstorms brain in there to make it go and you're well on your way to paraterraforming the place using simple machinery.
