IsItBullshit: Most developed countries send you your taxes as a receipt that you just confirm is correct, while the US makes you file your income and expenses and has the IRS confirm instead?

I live in the US and heard that in Japan and most other countries, people don't file their taxes. They instead just get a letter from the govt. and either pay what they owe or get a rebate.
