Poland | The Holy See | Other | Failure, remained secret | Leading up to the coronation of Pope Gregory XIV, dozens of Polish communist operatives disguised as aides to priests and the Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński traveled to the Holy See to attempt to make headway in easing the Catholic Church’s condemnation of Communism. The agents failed to make any headway, and completely failed to identify any members of the Curia that may be sympathetic to their cause. On numerous occasions the agents subtly espoused the virtues of communism to tourists and pilgrims who paid them no attention. The Church has no knowledge of the attempted subversion, and after the coronation of Pope Gregory XIV, the agents and priests were able to return to Poland unmolested. |
USSR | Haiti | Other | Failure, uncovered | In preparation to rig the Haitian elections, 15 Soviet agents chartered a private flight from Kingston Jamaica to Fond-des-Blancs, an airstrip just south of Miragoane, Haiti. The team, lead by one Gregoriy Yevgeny, was tasked with bribing officials and rigging ballot boxes to skew the Haitian election for a… favorable result. Three members of the team made way to Miragoane, where they checked into a student hostel posing as graduate students from the University of Vienna researching anthropology. They began to scout out the voting stations in the city. The remaining 12 agents approached a homestead near the airport where they killed two Haitians with garrotes and threw the bodies to the pigs the farmers were raising. They then stole the farmer’s trucks and split into two teams, one of which quickly made way for Port-au-Prince. Gregoriy remained at the cabin with five other agents, waiting for his Port-au-Prince team to make contact with election officials. However, by the time the team arrived in the capital of the island nation, the plan began to crumble. A suspicious onlooker, one Wilfrid Dorsainvil happened to be the younger brother of the murdered homesteaders, and noticed the very familiar truck, filled with pale men. The team then approached the head of the election committee and, lacking any real tact, offered him 100,000 USD. He blatantly refused and called for security. The Soviet team began to escape through the election offices, one of them throwing themselves through a window and breaking his ankle in the landing, and another hiding in a maintenance cabinet in the basement of the building. The remaining four were apprehended. Three of them bit into cyanide capsules and died on the way to the jail. The final agent’s capsule was defective and rotted away the inside of his mouth without killing him, causing him excruciating pain. His name is Vladimir Karpov and he is currently in custody at a hospital in Port-au-Prince. At the same time, Mr. Dorsainvil let his suspicions fester and called the police to report the stolen truck which was currently parked outside the Election offices. The Haitian police assumed that the truck must be related to the bribery attempt and three dead white men and quickly dispatched forces to the homestead. Gregoriy Yevgeny had no idea that the plan had failed so badly in Port-au-Prince and he didn’t expect the Haitian Police to arrive so suddenly. Looking outside, surrounded by the police, he realized that the mission was compromised. He glanced at his watch, gave a slight smirk, and then gave the order to his comrades. When the police breached the homestead, they found six bodies. The three agents in the hostel in Miragoane have no clue what happened to their comrades in Port-au-Prince and the homestead, although they will surely learn of it in the news. The Haitian authorities, however, also have no idea that there are three agents stranded in the hostel. The government has Vladimir Karpov in custody. |
Cuba | USA | Cell Establishment | Failure, remained secret | Where Kennedy could be criticized for his response to the Cuban missile Crisis, the same cannot be said of the infamous J. Edgar Hoover, who acted swiftly and immediately, having the FBI monitor Cubans arriving in the states and maintaining surveillance of any even mildly brown skinned Americans with communist leavings. They especially focused on Miami, a known hotbed for Cuban-Americans. His fears were not unfounded as Cuban agents tried time and time again to make contact with Cuban-Americans that were disillusioned with the current state of America and American/Cuban relations. Try as they might, the agents could never shake a feeling that they were being following, or that they were being watched. One agent was arrested at the Miami airport when he failed to present a suitable reason for entering the country, but he was simply put on a flight back to Mexico City. The Cuban agents failed to make any headway in recruiting agents, however their operations were not discovered either. |
