Introductory list of artists/albums?

I'd like to gain a good grounding in trad music so I'm looking for a list of essential albums, artists, bands that would collectively give a broad understanding of the various facets of the style. They can be classics that are well known or nuggets that demonstrate a certain instrument or approach perfectly.
I'm interested in mostly instrumental stuff but vocal things are welcome too.
Anyone have recommendations? Thanks
