Just finished watching Season 1, I have one question that I'm not sure was explained in the show...

So, if Omniman's whole purpose was to wipe out humanity, why didn't he just do that from the get go?
Why save humans as a superhero, get a wife, have a kid, and essentially screw around for 17 years until one day when he just decides: "Ok, I'm gonna start killing the weak people now"??
Apologies if this was explained during the show, I watched most of it while high.
