What if it was a Different Religion? (Olympic Opening Ceremony)

Post Body

To preface: I was not personally offended by the ceremony. I thought it was astounding and very artistic.

But the last supper part, and the sexual energy in many moments would rub people the wrong way. The easiest way to put it is: I Wouldn’t Have Done this at the Olympics. Even my partner (a fan of drag race) just found it weird.

EDIT: I appreciate all the input. It wasn’t depicting the Last Supper painting (though I still find the resemblance striking). I love the discussions though so shall it continue. Maybe if Mohammed SEEMED to be depicted, I wonder if the “actually it’s a Greek thing” would stop any ensuing violence.

I know, it’s France. Pretty much the top country of being proudly artistic, sexual, and most of all, Secular.

But I saw a tweet that simply said:

“What if they had portrayed Mohammed?”

So that’s what I want to pose, just for sake of conversation.

I know The Last Supper is a famous painting, but someone was playing the Role of Jesus. Depicting him either way.

And Mohammed doesn’t have a famous painting to pull from. But there must be some well regarded stories that a group could reenact?

And if France is very secular, why couldn’t they?

I know the Christian Right definitely is lighting this up a little much, I don’t think it’s really that bad. But after seeing a post here saying “I am glad people are offended!” I just got annoyed. We shouldn’t be okay with offending people. Like what? I get it, Reddit hates Christians, so what if it wasn’t Christians?

Which I guess are my questions:

Would your opinion change if it was Mohammed?

What’s the reason why they shouldn’t do this?

Just got me thinking. Because if we hold Islamist values about depicting their prophet as serious (and Christians don’t really have that rule), why honour it when in general Reddit should hate all religion, not just the Christian one.

You know damn well what would've happened.
