U.S Car With A Foreign Insurance

Can a US registered car have insurance from a different country? And be acceptable to the DMV. I know you can have U.S Insurance in a Mexican car but I can't find information about a U.S car having Insurance from a different country and being accepted by the DMV CALIFORNIA. Thanks.
