I was brake checked at a roundabout, causing me to swerve into a dirt field where my car got stuck. I called AAA for assistance and after an hour wait, a AAA tow truck driver arrived, released my car, then directed me to a nearby gas station. (sketchy, ik)
I was then instructed to step out of my vehicle and pressured to front $300 cash for his services. The employee argued that my situation wasn’t covered under basic roadside assistance since it happened near a highway exit and therefore required an additional $300 feet.
He even threatened to report me to the CHP for property damage if I didn’t pay him. Even though I didn’t damage anything … (It was an open dirt field)
I called my dad for help and he claimed it was a scam and urged me to leave immediately. He became somewhat aggressive after hearing that I didn’t want to pay the $300. Even blocking my path at one point, but I eventually left.
I’ve only been a AAA member for a few months and this was my first ever interaction with the company. I have two questions. Is this normal? Should I be concerned about the CHP if i’m reported? Anything helps. Thank you in advance.
