We have a 1925 home attic that we’re currently working on. We have no soffit vents (two tables ridge), but I believe the emergency roof repair included a ventilated drip edge - I know this isn’t a great solution. Regardless, our roof has a steep pitch and the previous owner blew in fiberglass insulation filling up the eaves. Do I need to remove this insulation just in order to allow for airflow over the roof regardless of the lack of vents?
Intuition would tell me in a 1925 home there is a lot of leaks cracks and airflow, and that keeping the eave area clear of obstruction would probably allow for the roof to last longer.
I would vacuum out all that insulation from the soffits, install baffles, and then air seal the rafters with rigid foam sprayed in.
This will significantly increase the time I’m spending on this project. Is this a good idea, or should I leave well enough alone and allow the insulation stuffed into the eaves to keep the interior walls in those rooms a little warmer and not worry so much about ventilation in the lower roof?
