Instagram update removes ability to pinch resize/crop

After selecting an image from your gallery, you can no longer pinch to resize it to whatever cropping you want. It now forces only square or full vertical/horizontal.
For someone obsessed with perfecting composition, this makes IG almost unusable!
There were a few negative reviews on the App store mentioning the removal of this feature, but I'm desperately hoping they reinstate it!
