Please help me, new to game!

I admit, I am new to the game having downloaded it two days ago. I played the original Injustice on Xbox360; but this isn’t really like that lol.
I am getting the hang of it, but I pulled this Batwoman the Drowned character and I can’t really do much to level her up. Is there any way to increase her stars or does that only work through extra shards/pulls?
Also, what’s the fastest way to mine gems and what should a new player be spending them on?
Any help is greatly appreciate!!
