Switching careers to IT?
Post Body

A little background; I’m 30, a CT technologist at the moment (aka CAT scans) and making about $36.50 an hour. I have over 7 years under my belt, I’m good at the job but the money is a problem. Living in CO feels impossible and plus, working in an ER feels like a toxic relationship. I had questions about switching over to IT. Since I already work a lot with computers, ever changing technology, different machines, IT is something I’m interested in. I’m aware of the starting wages for IT and that’s what concerns me. Trying to be realistic, but I’m already struggling with 36 an hour!! Does IT require taking a lot of call? What are the hours like (can I do 3 12’s for example)? Are you happy working in IT? What kind of certs are best? TIA

Comments

If you can get your ccna you might be able to get $30 an hour, LOL, the time and effort it’s going to take you to get to a similar wage in IT, is going to be like going and getting another bachelors or even masters degree. 4-8 years in the field and multiple certs and luck.

I have been working in the field for over 6 years and just got to $25 an hour have multiple certs and a degree.

Note it’s not any less toxic in IT.
