I read Infinite Jest for the second time with considerable ease. Now I'm searching out more of the same.

I went for "Gravity's Rainbow" initially, but it's been a slog. The pleasures of that novel just aren't as immediate. Pynchon's writing contorts itself in such opaque and meandering ways that DFW seems laser-focused by comparison. Regardless, it can't hold my attention.

What else would you all recommend I delve into?

I also enjoy Cormac McCarthy, Salman Rushdie, Haruki Murakami and Tao Lin, as a frame of reference.

I read Crying of Lot of 49 right after IJ and was very disappointed. Pynchon's little detective stories are just not that interesting to me. I've only read that and Inherent Vice, and was working towards gravity's rainbow, but after reading Crying, I don't really wanna tackle anymore Pynchon right now.

The dude can write, but Crying was kind of a lame story with no moments that hit me like IJ. The whole thing felt pointless and silly. And IJ has some surreal moments and absurd plot elements, but the characters are so rich and real, it seems believable. Pynchon's characters are not as well-rounded or relatable IMO. I think Pynchon is overrated and don't really get what the deal is.
