Can a “scam” text really show up as a first name?

Do “spam” texts ever come across on iPhone as a first name like “Alex?”
See title, my girlfriend and I were in the car and her phone was plugged in to the system it showed that there was a text from “Alex”. I know all her friends none of them named that so I asked who it was and she said it was spam.
So, is that possible? Can a scam number show up as a first name?
