Question about growing temperate plants indoors

Hi everyone, I live in southeastern Virginia and am wanting to grow some plants in my room. I really want to grow only native species, but I have heard that plants adapted to temperate climates can’t grow indoors due to the lack of a winter. Is there a way to circumvent this problem? Thanks!
