Im going to preface this post with the fact that I did not grow up belonging to a tribe or was surrounded by native culture by any large extent. My father is European and my mother is Guatemalan with Mayan ancestry. By all means I identity as latina in day to day life. However as I grow up and as culture becomes more of an important piece of my identity Iโve been wanting to connect more with my Mayan roots. The way my mother and grandmother talk about it is more so a genetic fact and small amounts of cultural ties do to guatemala culture as a whole being interwoven with Mayan. I find myself questioning if itโs my place the older I get and the more connected I want to be. At the end of the day Iโm a mixed race girl who grew up in Long Island but I would love to hear peoples opinions. I want to be respectful and I want to know where the line is between connecting with your roots and over stepping boundaries.
