Connecting with Mayan roots
Post Body

Im going to preface this post with the fact that I did not grow up belonging to a tribe or was surrounded by native culture by any large extent. My father is European and my mother is Guatemalan with Mayan ancestry. By all means I identity as latina in day to day life. However as I grow up and as culture becomes more of an important piece of my identity Iโ€™ve been wanting to connect more with my Mayan roots. The way my mother and grandmother talk about it is more so a genetic fact and small amounts of cultural ties do to guatemala culture as a whole being interwoven with Mayan. I find myself questioning if itโ€™s my place the older I get and the more connected I want to be. At the end of the day Iโ€™m a mixed race girl who grew up in Long Island but I would love to hear peoples opinions. I want to be respectful and I want to know where the line is between connecting with your roots and over stepping boundaries.
