When I see any kind of winter tree notes in a perfume my automatic reaction is 'bleh' because I can't stand the smell of pine. It's like a cheap candle. But when my girlfriend and I were decorating the Christmas tree the other night, I totally loved the smell the sap left on my hands. It didn't smell pine-y at all, it was almost kind of a sexy masculine scent. The tree was labeled as a fir balsam. So I was wondering, when I see fir notes listed in a perfume, does it probably mean more of the scent like I'm describing, or does it tend to be more of that general pine tree scent? If it's the former I've been discounting a lot of perfumes I might actually really like.
ETA: What's the difference between notes of spruce, balsalm, pine, etc?
