Reposted because I can’t count, apparently 😂
I’d seen Mythpunk Olfactive reviews every now and then on here but didn’t rush to it since it seemed like it was very heavy on the sweet gourmands.
Perhaps it is the alcohol base in MO’s perfumes, but something shared amongst all of these scents is high-fem sensuality that carries with it a specific pale muskiness that is at once delicate and ethereal. In impression, MO is very artistic and complex, generally without getting muddled or unapproachable . Formulations seem to be pretty consistent with moderate projection, although the longevity is quite impressive, especially on clothing. You’re getting your money’s worth, for sure!
Ashe was very attentive and emailed me to inquire about freebie trinket preferences. Unfortunately none of the ones I initially asked about were in stock so they sent me two of their choosing: Ghostflower Puff and Dusk Cherry Puff.
Paper Moon
Galbanum, bitter almond, Angelica root, orris root, white lilac, gardenia, pointe shoes, paper
Aoogah— This perfume has one of the most fascinating transformations I’ve experienced in perfumes: In the bottle, the bright green gardenia is front and center. It seems very floral and traditional. Upon application, however, the dry and crisp suede accord and paper note set themselves up as a canvas. As the scent blooms on the skin, one can imagine watery strokes of pale floral colors. Delicate. Again, the suede and paper coming in and out. Ultimately, Paper Moon is a very sultry, peak feminine scent— the orris and white florals take this nearly into lipstick territory but without the wax; it merely toes the powdery line. It’s a kissed love note on handmade paper, a lover’s perfume imprinted on it. Reapplication helps the gardenia and lilac hold onto the skin a bit longer so it feels more like a floral. Just lovely all around!
Ghostflower Puff
Radiant jasmine, powdered sugar, vanilla marshmallows, pale patchouli, ethereal musk
The jasmine in this takes the musk/patchouli into a very libidinal territory. I imagine a dewy white bloom dripping in musky nectar. This is a perfect humid summer scent. I wore it to a night club and got a lot of compliments— it is soooooo luscious paired with hot skin musk. You know that purple-tinted 2000s it girl Snapchat filter that makes one look really sultry and seductive? It’s that vibe. The sugar-dusted marshmallows sit in the background until the drydown for several hours, when all you start to notice is their pale imprint (which is very pleasant), creating a my-skin-but-better experience.
Strangeling
Iris, peppermint mate, green ivy, white moss, ink-stained fingers, notebook paper, shimmering woods
I can’t really review this one because it was an immediate scrubber when I tried it on my wrist. While it seemed to be one of the more interesting combinations in description, it was a heady bomb of nauseatingly soapy and astringent perfume on my skin. I couldn’t really discern any specific notes from the imprint that remained. Strangeling is probably the only sample that was genuinely disappointing because I chose this expecting something I would like. Skin chemistry is a funny thing— I recommend reading other people’s reviews of this because my experience seems to be so far from everyone else.
Fluffkin
Toasted puffed basmati rice, buttery marshmallow creme, rice flower, puffed marshmallows, sun-dried laundry, sheer woods
FLUFF! This is so cozy and soft I sprayed it onto a plushie I have on my bookshelf so it radiates the scent when I walk by. While the marshmallows may imply a sweet tooth, I don’t think this is quite candy-like at all, again, they just add a sweet delicacy to the toasted starchiness and the woods which feel very crisp and dry.
Dozykin
Blue lavender, golden amber, vanilla bean custard
I could not figure out what any of the notes I captured were except for a very herbal lavender, although it was very spectral. There’s a slight sweetness but it seems to not get along with something oddly sharp to me, which I guess has to be the perfume alcohol. I expected a lot more creaminess, but it was very light in that aspect. Overall, this one was maybe a bit too nebulous to my nose.
Dusk Cherry Puff
Tahitian vanilla cream, burnt sugar fairy floss, glacé dusk cherries, moonflower vines, tiare
This scent was included as an extra trinket sample. I wasn’t too fond of this one either but I’m not a big fan of dark caramel-y notes anyway. It wasn’t a scrubber; objectively, someone who is more into this kind of gourmand may like it. The cherry note is nice and bright, not jammy or syrupy. I didn’t want to keep smelling my wrists while it was on so I can’t say much about the experience as it dried down, caramelized sugar is just too heavy for me. The imprint that remains on the skin after several hours is a pretty, lightly sweetened floral.
Faerie Door
Bluebell, fairy orchid, peony, blackberry blossom, marshmallow, marzipan
Wow! This one is gorgeous and so 2000s Prada. I’m not familiar with the bluebell and orchid notes but I would say Faerie Door is peony and blackberry blossom-dominated. Ashe is just consistently masterful on the marshmallow notes. In this case, the marshmallow and marzipan just cushion out the fruity astringency of the blackberry blossom, avoiding any impression of dessert. There’s a fruity fizziness that reminds me more of Eastern European soda in a glass bottle; lots of sparkle and fruit without the syrupiness of American soft drinks. I will full-size this one eventually because it is that good!
