Greetings from a proud Indiana public school teacher!
First, the legislature said vouchers weren't a threat to public schools because they only helped the impoverished access private schools with our tax dollars. Now, the proposed state budget includes a $1 billion allotment for families making up to $220k. I wouldn't call those families impoverished. Indeed, this is a 70% increase in the budget compared to the 5% increase for public schools, which 90% of Indiana students currently attend. These are private (mostly religious) schools with zero accountability measures compared to public schools which are increasingly hogtied with state legislation. I would encourage you to reach out to your legislators and make your opinion known on this budget proposal, one way or the other. Indiana has had one of the largest voucher programs in the country for a while now. If it truly improved educational outcomes, we would have data to support that by now.

Have a great week, Hoosiers!
