And I have a lot of art prints of famous artwork from all over to use as references and to teach about different art styles through time to my students (who are kids-teens, and the occasional adult). Some paintings are obviously products of their time and depict problematic imagery, specifically about Indigenous peoples. (Specifically Kurz & Allison prints)
I generally only use these with older students and preface it by explaining why the imagery is problematic and often untrue, before going into the semantics of the artwork itself (use of light, color composition, what was going on in the art world at the time etc)
I would love to have some feedback if there is anything else I could be doing or doing differently.
(Note: I also cover a lot of cultural art from all over the world, including indigenous art. I just happened to wonder about this today during a lesson )
