As part of the new arrangements here at /r/IndianCountry, our calendar marks the first of each month as a "recap and upcoming thread" to give some insights as to what happened last month and what we will see for this month. Because this is the first post of this kind and it only lasts for a day, I will leave this one up for an extended period of time so other users have the opportunity to see it and hopefully establish a regular pattern of what is going on.
July
From July 1st to August 1st, we jumped from 3,448 subscribers to 3,626 subscribers, an increase of 178 new people. So welcome to all of you and we're glad you're on the road to decolonizing your minds!
Throughout a good portion of July, we had the /r/IndianCountry survey posted at the top of the sub. While we have already gone through many of the results, if you still feel like participating, there is still time to do so.
While I did not make an extended effort to verify this, I believe July has been the most active month for "Discussion/Question" posts this year, if ever. So thank you to all who posted and participated in those discussions. That's what we love here at /r/IndianCountry and something we hoped would pick up as our community grew.
Our top post for July was, unfortunately, the announcement for the death of Chief David Bald Eagle, a great Indian man who will be sincerely missed, but that we hope travels well on his new journey.
And finally, taking place for the majority of July, the Pacific Northwest experienced the annual Paddle to Nisqually canoe journey! Approximately 130 canoes were involved that included indigenous folks from our Indian Country. It even included some of our relatives from as far away as New Zealand. If you ever get the chance to make it out to a landing site, we encourage you all to do so. Some of our other users posted about it.
August
There are not many special events scheduled for the month of August at this time, but if there is something you want added, make note of it here or message the mods. We're always looking for events to put up and commemorate and/or celebrate.
Briefly, however, August will see some changes in certain aspects. As noted by the monthly suggestion thread, suggestions to consider will be made to the mod team and this includes how we conduct ourselves regarding certain types of questions.
We will be adding a new wiki section for a recommended reading list created with suggestions from our subscribers. This will be in addition to some other wiki features. The updates for these items will be posted once they are approved and completed.
We have also added the calendar to the sidebar.
