Anyone know why Sal was replaced?

I'm only up to season 9 so no spoilers please. Just got to the episode where Prince Herb was introduced as Sal's replacement but they never even acknowledged his exit from the show! So far I think Herb fits in really well, I think he was also a lifelong friend of the group as their chemistry is almost identical to that of Sal's. But I was just wondering why Sal left in the first place!
