Work permit extension issue

Hi, My roommate from Ireland sent his mail-in application for a work permit extension back in August of this year.
He hasn't heard from them yet and it is almost 4 months later.
Although he messed up by not writing down his application number. Is there any way he can retrieve any information from his application? Or at least get an idea of the status?
Any piece of info or advice is greatly appreciated!
