What a delightful film this is. I was intrigued by the prospect of what I thought would be a children's story with five mythical heroes - after all - you have to indulge your inner child now and then to preserve your sanity, right?
What I got was a little bit different. Idk what a motion picture rating 'R' really means as I don't think we have it in the UK, but I certainly wouldn't consider it to be a film you'd let your kids watch. At least not younger than, say 14 years old, anyway. If you took your 8 year old or perhaps even your 12 year old, you'd probably have to deal with a lot of tears.
But that's where the deception lies. The first half reels you in with these fantastical storylines and with humour which I'd liken to The Princess Bride and you feel as though you're watching a humorous Neverending Story or suchlike, but then it starts getting dark. WAY dark.
Visually it's beautiful. It was apparently filmed across 24 countries and it shows: I felt as though I'd been plunged into many different continents and my favourite addictive computer game from years ago - Prince of Persia - had come alive in front of my eyes.
The little girl who stars in it will make you want to breed with her ridiculously cute smile, even if you don't want kids. Don't believe me? Yeah, I'd be cynical too. Watch it and tell me you don't feel the same.
IMDB 7.8 / me 9.0. It only loses one point for three to five minutes of surrealism which I considered to be surplus to requirements and was probably only in it to showcase the filmaker's creative talents.
TL;DR: a beautiful, funny and warped fantasy story for adults.
