The 2008 film based on part of the life of the Argentine doctor and revolutionary Che Guevara during the Cuban revolution. Che is played very well by Benicio Del Toro (who looks very much like him).
The film spans 3 timelines but this does not get confusing, one is 1955 in Mexico and is used very little, at the beginning and the end of the film, this is based around a meal and talk Che would have when he met Fidel, the second and most important is the revolution from 1956 until January 1st 1959 the third and inter-spaced during the film in black and white is 1964 where he is interviewed and speaks in front of the UN.
The film is of course in Spanish and this adds to the action, and plenty of action there is, with it being a war film of course. Along with lots of talking, it is fast paced as it takes in two years of revolution, much of which was spent walking around mountains and laying in wait to ambush the army.
One of the best parts of the film is the derailing of a train in Santa Clara, for which they actually derailed a train and had one take to get it right
The film is good and I am biased as this is the area of History I specialise in but it gives a good overview of why the revolution was a success and why the people were happy for it to happen and gave help to the revolutionaries. It does not examine the politics behind Che, a film to cover this would take much longer than the 134 minutes in this.
Overall I would give it 8 out of 10. Some of the subtitles are translated slightly wrong, these being the more fruity language but that is understandable. And yes there is a Che: Part Two that I will do another day.
