Hi!

So I go through stretches where I want to buy something and all I do is waste my work day researching and researching and all of a sudden my work day is over and I got nothing productive done.

Luckily I work from home and I am fortunate enough to be in a position at my job in sales where its a bit cushy, but I accidentally take way too much advantage of that.

Two weeks ago I got the thought in my head that it would be cool to own a boat and I would maybe look for one in a year or two... Two weeks later I just bought a boat yesterday. That is not like me because usually I am always very apprehensive to make a big purchase like that. It sounds backwards from what I just said, but I am actually kind of frugal and this is the first time I made a BIG purchase that was a 100% luxury that was thousands of dollars at one drop of a hat. If I get into an expensive sport I will find good deals on new and used products and buy them across a certain timeframe, not at once.

Typically I would not pull the trigger on something so fast because I research the shit out of it. I.e. I've been thinking/researching about a new car for over a year, but haven't done anything about it.

I also get like this when I get into a new hobby and want to learn everything about it and/or research all the gear or equipment I will need and I spend my whole day focusing on that instead of what I need to get done through a work day.

Don't get me wrong, I get done what I need to for my position at work, but its sales so I can always be doing more. I am not slacking; as I am in a management position and I support my team very well.

Sometimes it is helpful in life when I am familiarizing myself with a new business venture or working on something else productive so I understand it can be a positive too.

How can I make myself productive through the work day and compartmentalize my brain to focus on work or something else when I need to and focus on my next purchase/hobby/venture when it is appropriate?
