I am ethnically Chinese and I migrated to Australia as a child. I've lived here for most of my life but on some subconscious level it never felt right, as much as I tried to embrace this country. I think the culture and politics here is becoming less and less welcoming for someone of my heritage and I could just stay here and be invisible while buying up properties like other Chinese or I could actually do something more meaningful with my life. I feel an increasing push to assimilate and I worry about what will happen if I have children.
I have considered mainland China and Taiwan but for political reasons I prefer to be in a neutral third country that is still in Asia and has a large Chinese population.
My main hurdle is being able to find a job in either Singapore or Malaysia. I don't particularly enjoy being a lawyer and and if there was an opportunity to change careers I would take it. I feel increasingly suffocated in my life, both due to career burnout and feeling politically and culturally marginalised.
If I have children, I definitely would not want them to grow up as minorities in a white country and risk losing connection with their language and culture.
I would be grateful if anyone has any idea of what the job market is like in Singapore/Malaysia, pros and cons of each, comparison of healthcare and education in each country and ease of becoming a permanent resident. Also, how are the salaries and cost of living? I am earning pretty good money in Australia at the moment, but unfortunately I cannot work remotely in my current role, and the rising cost of living, inflation and mortgage interest rates are making my salary worth less than it should be.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.
