Hello!
A childhood friend of mine who moved to Germany some years ago recently reached out and offered to help me through the process of moving to Germany.
I do not currently speak German, however this process seems like it would take some time so I can start lessons soon if it's truly feasible.
The reason being that I am a transgender person, and it has become increasingly hostile to live here.
I had honestly dismissed the possibility, as I did not finish college and only have my US unrestricted Class-A Commercial Driver's License. I believe this is the equivalent of a Category CE German license? I operate a tractor/trailer with a weight of 45,500kg and length of 22 meters. I have 3 years and 7 months experience, including 6 months of formal training. I have experience on both automatic and unsynchronised manual transmission tractors, and posses a certification to operate liquid bulk tanker trailers. However, all of my experience is with tempurature controlled, dry box, or shipping container-chassis combo trailers. I currently work for a food distributor (for McDonalds). It is largely labor, and small amounts of driving. I have experience in all weather conditions and terrain that can be found in the US.
From what I read, my current states driving license is fully recognized by Germany. However it does specify passenger vehicle license, whereas on other nation's is does not. Would this mean I would be required to undergo additional exams/certifications to transfer my commercial license?
What cities/towns (if any) are big freight hubs, that would be good to consider for finding employment? Ideally, local truck driving jobs with limited time away from home. I am not picky about where I live, but I do prefer rainy/cold environments. I live in the Pacific Northwestern US, currently.
From my understanding, wages for truck drivers are much lower? I currently make the equivalent of €79,000/yr, in an high cost of living area. I would not mind making less if the CoL matched and I can afford to live on my own. I would like to enjoy being alive instead of feeling trapped in a rat race.
Another concern is I do have some health issues on top of being transgender. I do have an autism diagnosis (although clearly I can function independently with no support). I have some other conditions that similarly don't require much beyond basic medications and an occasional checkup. While any of these could become disabling, it's extremely unlikely and for me their impact is minor. Would these disqualify me from moving?
Thank you all for your time!
